Tempting!
fascinated:It’s tempting to publish the names and addresses of all the music PR, marketing and management firms who’ve written emails to The Hype Machine that clearly show their lack of understanding of the project, the Internet, different Internet media, blogs and what happens to music on blogs.
Given that it is exactly this kind of knowledge that those agencies advertise as their value, I am left concerned with whether artists should continue paying these guys. After all, if they can’t figure this out…
Alas, we opt for the right thing and respond with a polite explanation of what the Hype Machine, music blogs and genunie word-of-mouth are all about and archive the message.
And so it goes…
Wow. The quote above is from Anthony Volodkin’s blog. Some of you will know him as one of the guys behind The Hype Machine, a very cool music discovery site.
Judging by his blog headline, he gets out of bed for the same reason I have for the last 10 years… “to get people excited about music.”
But yeah, as he says… there is a disconnect between new media and old media, but this is not a new story. Anthony, it’s been Groundhog Day for over 10 years now! But no matter how frustrating it might seem, this disconnect is here to stay for a little longer. The “out with the old” needs to happen both while and before the “in with the new” takes place.
But as I’ve learned over the last few years - this is the exciting part!
No one said this turnover in media was going to be pretty. The old guys from the old guard at least get to retire to save face. The others get the unenviable task of fighting the unwinnable fight as long as they can keep their con running.
Anthony - be thankful you are part of the growing segment of the music industry… and not the shrinking part!
